Awards & Accolades

Hunchback Last year, PST entertained more than 25,000 theatergoers of all ages in over 350 performances. That puts us in the Top Fifteen of Largest Performing Arts Groups in greater Boston, as ranked by number of audience served. [Boston Business Journal Book of Lists 2003]

Paul Vincent Davis, our Artist in Residence, is widely considered the finest hand puppeteer in the country. He has received the rare President's Award from The Puppeteers of America and 4 UNIMA Citations for Excellence—the highest award given in puppetry—during his 27 years at PST. Boston Parents' Paper honored him with a feature story for his 25th anniversary.

Puppet Showplace has repeatedly been chosen as "Favorite Family Entertainment" and "Best Children's Live Theatre" by the Boston Parents' Paper, elevating us to their Hall of Fame.

The TAB Newspapers also gave PST their Readers' Choice #1 Family Entertainment Award.

PST was named "Favorite Birthday Party Place" by the Boston Parents' Paper.

Kids Explore Boston, the guidebook to children's activities, gave Puppet Showplace Theatre their highest rating.

Elliot Norton Citation

Every year the Boston Theatre Critic's Association bestows their "best of the year" awards at a gala ceremony at the Cutler Majestic Theatre in the theatre district. Traditionally the awards include honors such as "best actress in a large company," "best play by a resident company" and so on. Some years they also bestow "Special Citations, " and in May of 2004 Puppet Showplace Theatre was honored "for thirty years of dedication to keeping the ancient art of puppetry alive for audiences of all ages. "

The citation came at the end of the evening just before actress Paula Plum's award for sustained achievement, quite a place of honor on the program. This was a very moving moment for PST as it's the first time we've ever been so honored by our peers in the theatre community rather than the puppetry community, and quite a validation for the idea Mary Churchill had 30 years ago for a special place where children and adults alike could enjoy and learn from this powerful and imaginative art form.

We're very grateful to the committee for their recognition of our work, and their faith in our continued success.
